Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?
Orthodontic problems like an overbite or crowding can do more than just ruin your smile — they can make it more difficult to practice good oral hygiene and even lead to more serious oral health problems in the future.
However, many teenagers and adults are understandably reluctant to get traditional braces for personal and professional reasons. Invisalign® clear aligner trays are a discreet and effective treatment for many common orthodontic issues.
At Manhasset Dental Arts, Dr. Elizabeth Abrams, Dr. Michael Abrams, and our dental team offer a range of cosmetic and general dentistry services for the entire family at our office in Manhasset, New York.
Am I a candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign doesn’t work for everyone. In cases of significant and more severe orthodontic problems, our dentists may recommend traditional braces instead to ensure the best results.
Invisalign is designed to correct mild to moderate bite and alignment issues for teenagers and adults. Some of the main requirements to qualify for Invisalign include:
- Having generally healthy teeth and gums
- Practicing good oral hygiene throughout the treatment period
- Having the ability to follow instructions and guidelines for wearing Invisalign
- Not smoking
- Having mild to moderate bite/alignment issues
If you have any oral health issues that need attention like cavities or gum disease, our dentists may recommend treating them first before getting Invisalign.
Invisalign aligner trays are easy to use, more flexible, and less invasive than traditional braces, but you’ll have to follow the guidelines to ensure the best results. Invisalign consists of a series of custom-designed, clear aligner trays that gradually shift your teeth into the correct alignment.
Each tray is worn for a few weeks and then replaced with the next tray in the series. One of the main benefits of Invisalign is that the trays are removable, so you can keep up with your normal oral hygiene routine.
You also don’t have to worry about dietary restrictions and can continue to eat the foods you love. That said, you must keep the trays in for 22 hours per day to get results.
