Orthodontic Aligners Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth gradually, much like traditional metal braces. The difference, however, is that Invisalign doesn’t use metal brackets, wires, or bulky appliances to perfect your smile.

Instead, these clear aligners are made out of BPA-plastic and are custom-designed to fit every groove of your teeth. They’re practically invisible, so you can laugh and smile without feeling self-conscious. Invisalign can be used to treat the following dental concerns:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Crowded mouth
  • Open bite
  • Large tooth gaps

In more complicated cases, Invisalign can even be used in conjunction with metal braces to perfect your smile.

Are there Invisalign benefits I should consider?

While Invisalign clear aligners are designed to straighten teeth in the same way as conventional braces, they offer many unique benefits over their traditional counterparts:

Appearance

Invisalign specialists custom-design these clear aligners to fit your teeth perfectly, so they blend in with your smile. Most onlookers may not even notice a difference when you’re wearing Invisalign.

Comfort

Discomfort is one of the most common complaints of conventional braces. The wires and brackets can irritate your cheeks and gums. Clear aligners are smooth, just like your natural teeth, so they won’t leave cuts and sores in your mouth.

Time

Traditional braces typically take 18 months to three years to straighten your teeth, while Invisalign takes around one year to 18 months.

Oral health

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign clear aligners are removable, so you can take them out to eat, drink, and brush and floss your teeth — plus you can still eat all your favorite foods.

What is the Invisalign process like?

Invisalign is a completely individualized orthodontic treatment. Once you decide that clear aligners are right for you, your dentist uses digital impressions to map out your personalized plan. Unlike traditional molds, digital impressions aren’t messy or uncomfortable.

Your digital impressions are then uploaded into Invisalign’s proprietary software, which designs a detailed plan for your smile. After your plan is set, the lab creates custom-fit aligners that you must wear 20 to 22 hours a day.

Depending on your unique plan, you should receive a new set of aligners once every two weeks. Over time, your teeth will gradually shift into place, and you’ll be left with a gorgeous, healthy smile. Call Manhasset Dental Arts or schedule an appointment online to learn more.
